It takes a village to raise a child

Type: Competition entry / Educational

Location: Vantaa, Finland

Year: Competition 2012

International Competition

Upper class

The core of the competition entry is to see a building as a village. Compact functional entities are confined to City blocks, which define the Streets and the Plazas - the multifunctional common spaces of the building. The Grid street plan allows the various paths between the spaces. The scale is intimate in the City blocks but also spacious and festive on the Plazas.

There is a strong emphasis on transformability - that is, the long lifespan of the building. The big volume is divided into many smaller boxes, an aesthetic choice that also makes it easy to extend the building in the future.
