SOLA - SERLACHIUS ART MUSEUM
Finding answers through deduction
Type: Competition entry / Museums and pavillions
Location: Mänttä, Finland
Year: Competition 2011
Upper- and awarded class (10/approx. 600)
The existing museum manor with its surrounding buildings, gardens and lake views is a nationally - if not internationally - notable milieu. The idea for the competition entry was to pick a perfect location for the extension so that it wouldn't break the landscape, and on the other hand, to enhance the milieu with handsome and fitting architecture. The straightforward and muted side faces the built environment while the organic and expressive side faces the natural environment. Competition entry is named "sola" ("cove") after the organic and intensive spatial series with the old manor building as the visual endpoint.
